The availability of genetic variability is essential for plant breeding aiming to obtain new cultivars with high yield and resistance to pest and diseases. The National Center for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (CENARGEN) and the National Center for Soybean Research (CNPSo), both under the aegis of the Brazilian Enterprize of Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA), are working toward increasing the diversity of soybean through germplasm introduction. The characterization and evaluation are in a advanced stage in supporting the utilization of germplasm in the strong soybean breeding programme at CNPSo. Long term seed conservation of soybean base collection is carryed out at CENARGEN, in adequate storage chambers at -18oC. Information regarding this collection is monitored y computer System for Genetic Resources (SIRG). |
